Chancellor Barzani receives high-level U.S. delegation

The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, received a high-level US delegation today led by Ambassador Stuart Jones to discuss the ongoing war against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS)

The meeting touched recent military gains against ISIS,  including significant advances by Kurdish forces in Syria.

Both officials underlined the importance of a timely and effective assault on remaining ISIS strongholds, including Mosul. Masrour Barzani said, “ISIS continues to suffer major defeats, compelling them to reinforce their strongholds with terrorists from Iraq and Syria.”

“Victories by Kurdish forces in Syria, including control of major strategic supply routes to Raqqa, increases pressure on the terrorist organization,” he added.

Ambassador Jones reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting the Kurdistan Region in its fight against ISIS, adding that local tribal forces remain essential to defeating ISIS elsewhere in Iraq.

The meeting was also attended by the US Consul General in Erbil, Joseph Pennington.
