Masrour Barzani: We are concerned about developments in the Ninewa Plains

Chancellor Masrour Barzani received today the Chaldean Archbishop of Erbil, Mr. Bashar Warda, to discuss recent regional developments, including the situation in the Ninewa Plains.

Both discussed the presence of armed groups in predominately Christian areas and measures to de-escalate tensions. They also discussed the conditions necessary to attract investment and rebuild areas damaged during the anti-ISIL campaign. Chancellor Barzani said the Kurdistan Region continues to be a model for tolerance and co-existence in the Middle East. He expressed his personal support for the rights and demands of Christian communities to determine their own future.

Archbishop Warda said instability in the Ninewa Plains prevents the return of displaced families and has led all international organizations rebuilding homes to leave the country. He added that lifting the ongoing air embargo would help reconstruction efforts and deliver aid. The Archbishop explained that in the last three decades Christian communities recognize the Kurdistan Region remains the last safe haven for families fleeing and persecution.
