Readout of Chancellor Masrour Barzani’s meeting with US National Security Advisor Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster

Chancellor Masrour Barzani met today in the White House with U.S. National Security Advisor Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster to discuss Iraqi Kurdistan-U.S. bilateral relations and important regional developments. During their meeting, both officials reaffirmed the partnership between the United States and the Kurdistan Region. Chancellor Barzani welcomed General McMaster’s support for a strong and united Kurdistan Region in a strong united Iraq and said the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional rights must be respected. They exchanged views on ongoing Erbil-Baghdad talks and security developments. Chancellor Barzani highlighted the abuses and displacement of people in the disputed territories. He said the KRG expects the Iraqi Government to take practical measures to build trust and advance a broader dialogue. While discussing these issues, both officials agreed on the importance of addressing the conditions that led to the rise of ISIL and explored ways to strengthen the shared fight against terrorist organizations. The KRG Representative to the United States, Ms. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, joined the meeting.
