The Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Military Intelligence, known locally as Hewalgri, was established to provide analysis, intelligence and support to the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, and has been central in the war against the Islamic State (ISIL). Its primary objective is to gather military related intelligence and de-conflict battlefield information to prevent friendly fire incidents and collateral damage on the battlefield.
Since August 2014, military officers embedded in frontline positions with Peshmerga Forces and U.S.-led Global Coalition partners have provided unparalleled intelligence on enemy plans, equipment, positions and deployments. Liaison officers embedded in all sectors of military operations work to coordinate U.S.-led Global Coalition airstrikes against ISIL positions.
Their ability to de-conflict the battlefield has prevented friendly fire incidents and collateral damage. The Directorate General has a senior officer in the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs to coordinate activities and disseminate intelligence.
