Chancellor Barzani meets Special Envoy to His Holiness Pope Francis

The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, received this morning Cardinal Fernando Feloni, Special Envoy to His Holiness, Pope Francis.

Masrour Barzani and Cardinal Feloni discussed ongoing efforts by the authorities in the Kurdistan Region and the international community to provide aid and assistance to those fleeing violence. The meeting underlined the need to protect and preserve the well-known co-existence amongst various communities in the Kurdistan Region.

Cardinal Feloni said, ‘Kurdistan is a mosaic several cultures and ethnicities living peacefully together.’

Speaking about the continued advancements by the Peshmerga to expel terrorists from the land of Kurdistan, Masrour Barzani said, ‘We are very proud of the religious freedoms in the Region, and we will continue to defend and protect these rights and principles.’

‘This is an attack against us as much as it is against the Christian families,’ he added.

The meeting also touched on measures to take to restore security in areas now under the control of the Peshmerga to allow safe passage to those who have fled their homes.

Cardinal Feloni was accompanied by a large delegation and the KRG Representative to Italy, Rezan Qadir.
