Chancellor Barzani receives British Select Defence Committee

Masrour Barzani, Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), received several members of the Select Defence Committee from the British Parliament as part of their inquiry into the situation in Iraq and Syria and the threat of posed by the Islamic State.

The committee, headed by Mr Dai Havard MP, is gathering information about the British engagement in the war on ISIS and assess the military and financial resources at its disposal. It will also take into considering the needs of the Kurdistan Region, including the call for heavy armaments.

Speaking about the need for a concerned international effort, Masrour Barzani said: “This is a global war against terrorism and it requires a collective response to defeat and eradicate the threat.”

“We have said time and again that ISIS should have any sanctuary and have called for an expansion of the air strikes.”

Part of the committee is in Baghdad to meet with officials of the Federal Government to understand its needs.

Masrour Barzani expressed appreciation for the British support to the Peshmerga but called for more heavy arms to defeat ISIS. The committee will include the need and call for further, heavier arms in its inquiry.

The British Consul General in Erbil, Mr Angus McKee, accompanied the delegation.
