Chancellor Barzani receives Deputy Head of Mission of Swedish Embassy in Baghdad
The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, received Ms Jessica Svärdström, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Sweden in Baghdad and Head of the Swedish Section Office in Erbil.
The meeting touched on recent security developments in Iraq, including the ongoing offensive against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIL) in Tikrit. Masrour Barzani said, “The capture of Tikrit is a turning point for the Iraqi Armed Forces.
“This will be a big blow to the strength of ISIL in the country and could lead to the collapse of the organisation.”
Both officials discussed the need for local forces and tribes to take the lead in offensives and for political conditions to be set by the Iraqi Federal Government for an assault on Mosul. They also discussed negotiations between Erbil and Baghdad to resolve political differences.
Masrour Barzani added, “Iraq must pursue political reconciliation in parallel to military efforts.”
Sweden will increase its humanitarian contributions for refugees and internally displaced persons in the Kurdistan Region through the international coalition, Ms Svärdström said.
“The war on ISIL is a key concern for all of us in Europe,” she added.
