Chancellor Barzani receives French Ambassador to Iraq, Dr. Marc Barety

The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, met French Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Marc Barety, today to discuss latest security and political developments.

Masrour Barzani: “Mosul will always be a threat to the security of Kurdistan so long as it remains a base for terrorists.

The meeting touched on recent gains by the Peshmerga against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), including a recent offensive in South of Kirkuk. Both officials also discussed plans for the offensive against Mosul and latest developments in other parts of Iraq.

France is part of the International Coalition against ISIS and provides training to the Peshmerga as part of its contributions.

Masrour Barzani called on Ambassador Barety to expand contributions in size and scope in line with local security needs. He said, “The defeat of ISIS in the battlefield forces the group to resort to cowardly acts,” referring to the recent attack in Erbil.

Speaking about a future offensive against Mosul, he said: “It is not fair to expect Peshmerga forces to participate in an offensive if they are not as equipped as the Iraqi Army.”

Ambassador Bariti said, “The global perspective is that ISIS has been degraded thanks to efforts by the Peshmerga and the international coalition.”

“We know that ISIS is a threat not only to Kurdistan and Iraq, but to the region and the whole world,” he added.

The meeting was attended by the French Consul General in Erbil, Mr. Alain Guépratte.
