Chancellor Barzani receives high-level delegation led by UK Defence Senior Advisor to Middle East, Lieutenant General Tom Beckett
Today Chancellor Masrour Barzani received a high-level delegation led by UK Defence Senior Advisor to the Middle East, Lieutenant General Tom Beckett, to discuss the global campaign against the Islamic State (ISIL) in Iraq, Syria and beyond.
Lieutenant General Beckett reaffirmed a pledge by the British government to replenish stocks of ammunition for heavy machine guns. Further, he emphasised on continued efforts to institutionalise the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs and proposals for further non-lethal aid to the Kurdistan Region.
‘Your contributions has been – and continues to be – critical to the campaign. There is great regard for the Kurds and the Peshmerga,’ he added.
Speaking about the continued presence of ISIL in major Iraqi cities, Chancellor Barzani said: ‘We are wining battles but not the war because the root causes of this conflict remain in place. ISIL is a byproduct of the political failure in Baghdad and elsewhere.’
Later, both officials touched on recent political developments in Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, and future of Erbil -Baghdad ties. Chancellor Barzani called for talks with Baghdad to find a new approach to allow both nations – Kurds and Arabs – to live side-by-side in peace, dignity and security.
