Chancellor Barzani receives high-level UK military delegation

The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, received this afternoon a military delegation headed by Lt. General Sir Simon Mayall, the Kurdistan Region Security Envoy to the British Prime Minister.

Lt. General Mayall is visiting the Kurdistan Region to bid farewell to senior officials as he retires from the British Armed Forces. The meeting was attended by the British Consul General in Erbil, Mr Angus McKee, and other senior officials.

The meeting touched on political and security developments in Iraq, including recent offensives against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Masrour Barzani said that ongoing problems in Iraq are a result of repeated mistakes that can be solved only by addressing underlying concerns from each community.

“Iraq will not function in its current form. The status-quo is not sustainable, stable or peaceful as each community wants their own version of Iraq,” he said.

Masrour Barzani thanked Lt. Sir Mayall for his service and strong commitment to the Kurdistan Region since the outset of the war last year.

The British Consul General in Erbil said, “It is in our national security interests to be here and fight with you.”
