Chancellor Barzani receives Special Presidential Envoy to Global Coalition

The Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, received Ambassador Brett McGurk, Deputy Special Presidential Envoy to the Global Coalition to Counter Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and Lieutenant General James LTerry, Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR).

The meeting touched on a range of issues, including recent military developments in the war on ISIS and major advances by Kurdish fighters in Syria. They also discussed political developments in the Kurdistan Region, security situation in Iraq and further measures to isolate key ISIS strongholds.

Masrour Barzani and Ambassador McGurk agreed on the need for close cooperation between the International Coalition and forces on the ground fighting ISIS. Ambassador McGurk reaffirmed the United States’ continued support to Peshmerga forces, referring to the Kurdistan Region as a ‘partner’.

Speaking about recent political developments in the Kurdistan Region, Ambassador McGurk said that the Presidency question must be determined as quickly as possible as ISIS feeds on political and security vacuums.

Matthias Mitman, US Consul General in Erbil, and other senior military officials attended the meeting.
