Chancellor Barzani receives US Presidential Envoy for Global Coalition
Chancellor Masrour Barzani received today the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, Ambassador Brett McGurk, to discuss recent military gains and developments in the operation to clear ISIL from Ninewa Province.
In the meeting both officials emphasized the importance of sustained air support and noted the noticeable change and increase of air strikes since the start of the operation to liberate Mosul. Speaking about the operation, Chancellor Barzani said: “ISIL has been defeated in many fronts, and this is their last battle. It’s important to keep up the momentum.”
Ambassador McGurk said, “We are in this together. You will see sustained support from us to defeat this very barbaric, vicious enemy.”
Both officials also discussed efforts to convene the high-level committee between Erbil, Mosul and Baghdad to address post-ISIL management plans and concerns. Chancellor Barzani also emphasised the growing dialogue between Peshmerga Forces and the Iraqi Army.
Ambassador McGurk conveyed condolences and respect from President Barack Obama for the bravery of Peshmerga Forces.
