Chancellor Masrour Barzani receives Commander of Special Operations Command of Canada

Chancellor Masrour Barzani met today Canada’s new Commander of Special Operations Command Major General Peter Dawe to discuss, among other issues, the security partnership between Peshmerga Forces and Global Coalition forces in the Kurdistan Region. Chancellor Barzani thanked Canada for the support to  the Kurdistan Region through the anti-ISIL campaign, and welcomed Major General Dawe’s commitment to the strong partnership and deliver a lasting defeat to ISIL. The two also officials had a lengthy exchange on drivers fueling ISIL’s activities in Kirkuk, Diyala, Mosul and Anbar. Chancellor Barzani emphasized that failure to address underlying causes in Iraq and beyond, including social and economic challenges, risks undercutting the progress in the fight against terrorism. During the meeting, Chancellor Barzani and Major General Dawe also reviewed efforts to form a representative government in Baghdad.
