Major Peshmerga advances in Rabia and Awinat towards Sinjar
PESHMERGA FORCES CLEAR AND SECURE AREA EAST OF RABIA AND AWINAT, AND CONTINUE ADVANCE IN SINJAR.
On the morning of 21 December 2014, Peshmerga forces completely secured the area East of Rabia to Awinat. By 1330hrs it was cleared of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and mines planted by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
On 21 December 2014, Counter-IED teams cleared key roads between South of Rabia and North of Mt. Sinjar. This second corridor is now in use and efforts to restore local services are underway. Counter-IED teams continue to clear this vast area of approximately 2,100 square kilometres.
As of 1500hrs on 21 December 2014, Peshmerga forces continue to advance inside Sinjar, engaging and suppressing ISIS positions. The advance is backed by International Coalition air strikes.
50 ISIS fighters were killed by International Coalition air strikes and Peshmerga forces in Sinjar on 20 December 2014. Approximately 250-300 ISIS fighters have been killed since the start of the large-scale offensive on 17 December 2014.
