Masrour Barzani receives Charge’ D’Affaires of the Philippines Embassy in Baghdad
Today Chancellor Masrour Barzani received the Charge’ D’Affaires of the Philippines Embassy in Baghdad, Mr. Elmer Cato, to discuss growing bilateral relations and recent developments on the war on the Islamic State (IS).
Speaking about recent advances by Peshmerga forces against IS in East Mosul, Mr. Cato said: ‘I am here to congratulate you on your success against IS. We have lots to learn from you.’
‘You are on the forefront in this war and you are fighting on behalf of all of us. Manila is receptive to helping Kurdistan Region, in capacity building and training,’ he added.
Both officials also discussed efforts to promote economic, academic and cultural ties between both communities. Mr Cato announced his government is studying proposals to establish diplomatic representation in Erbil.
On the war on IS, Chancellor Barzani called on the Philippines government to role in supporting the Kurdistan Region in its fight against global terrorism. He said, ‘IS began in Iraq, flourished in Syria and now has expanded throughout the Middle East and North Africa.’
He added, ‘Our Peshmerga are equipped to hold the front lines, but not enough to outgun the enemy’.
