Readout of Chancellor Masrour Barzani’s meeting with Chief of Office Security Cooperation – Iraq
Chancellor Masrour Barzani received today a delegation led by Chief of Office Security Cooperation – Iraq Major General Bradley Becker and discussed the political and security situation in Iraq. During the meeting, they discussed at length practical confidence-building measures necessary to advance security cooperation between Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and Peshmerga Forces in disputed territories. They had a candid exchange on the political conditions required to build trust between Iraqi communities in general and Erbil and Baghdad in particular. Major General Becker also briefed Chancellor Barzani on future US support for integrating, reorganizing and training programs for ISF, including Peshmerga Forces. In that regard, Chancellor Barzani underscored the importance of provisioning a fair share of training, weapons and equipment to Peshmerga Forces. Both officials also expressed concerns over ISIL’s resurgence in several provinces and noted opportunities for both ISF and Peshmerga Forces to work together to combat the shared threat. They agreed to continue close coordination and hold further consultations.
