Readout of Chancellor Masrour Barzani’s meeting with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State

Chancellor and Prime Minister-designate Masrour Barzani received today U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq and Iran Andrew Peek. In the meeting attended by KRG Representative to U.S. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Matthew Tueller, both sides discussed at length the longstanding relationship between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The situation in the disputed territories, and shared support for the return of joint security mechanisms between Peshmerga Forces and Iraqi Security Forces, was also reviewed. In outlining his reform agenda, Chancellor Barzani urged Deputy Assistant Secretary Peek to sustain monthly stipends to the Peshmerga Forces. He emphasized that the next government intends to lead new, sustained effort to tackle Erbil-Baghdad disputes. The meeting also touched on recent political developments in Iraq. They agreed continue regular consultations on these issues. U.S. Consul General in Erbil Steven Fagin was also in the meeting.
